Mrs. Escobedo - First Grade

Hello My Name Is...

Tonya (Catalina) Escobedo

Welcome to Kindergarten/1st grade combination class!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to my Kindergrten/1st Grade class!!  I started my teaching journey by graduating from Brandman University in 2006 and began teaching at Lemoore Elementary in 2006 as a Speech Therapy Assistant, Special Education Tutor, and Substitute Teacher.  I moved to Central in 2014 as a 2nd grade teacher, then as 4/5 combo teacher, and in my second year as a K/1 combo teacher.

I know that it is going to be an exciting year working on our reading, language arts, writing, math, science, and history skills. We have a lot of work ahead of us. However, with your support and patience, this will be an outstanding year for all of us.

Homework

Homework is crucial for several reasons.  First, it helps to reinforce skills learned in class.  These skills might be a review of concepts your child has a good handle on or might be information that is new and needs to be practiced.  Homework also teaches responsibility, time management and organizational skills.  We all have busy lifestyles that require balancing.  This is a skill your student will use his or her whole life! Parents Homework Responsibility- Make sure that your child gets his work done properly. Please check it and help them make corrections if needed. You are their NUMBER 1 FAN! Lots of encouragement and praise will make them feel successful. Also put homework in a special spot so that is doesn’t get lost or messed up. Help them remember to bring it back.

Homework assignments will be handed out each Monday.  It is to be completed and returned on that Friday morning. Your child’s total homework time should take no longer than 25 minutes.  If you find that homework is consistently taking an excessive amount of time, please communicate with me so we can ensure that this is a time of reinforcement, not frustration!

In regards to Common Core Standards this is their Mission Statement: "The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy." http://www.corestandards.org/

If you have any questions, concerns, or anything you think I should know, please feel free to call me at 924-7797 Ext. 2215 or email me, [email protected]. Let’s make this a rewarding year!

Discipline

We use a clip chart system and a pebble jar to monitor behavior. Students may clip up or down depending upon their choices. Parents will be notified if their child clips down three times in one day. Additionally, students will lose their Snack Shack privilege if this occurs.

Rewards for positive behavior include verbal praise and tickets for our class raffle drawing every Friday based on behavior.
