Mrs. Holland

Hello everyone! During this difficult time, I will be trying to communicate with all of my first grade students in a different way. Please follow the directions below.

1. Download the Zoom app to your phone or computer (
This will allow me to invite each student to an online meeting.

2. Epic- You will receive an email to sign up for free. All students have used this site in the classroom and they love it!

3. Spelling City is used to practice our weekly lists. Search teacher, then go to Sherri Holland. We are currently on 6-1, but any of the lists would be helpful.

My name is Sherri Holland and this is my 29th year of teaching.  I have a multiple subject teaching credential and a specialist credential in early childhood education from California State University, Fresno. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, K/1st, and third grade. I am currently a first grade teacher and I love it!

My goal is to help your child develop a love of learning, a sense of accomplishment in everything he or she does, and to become a capable, successful little student!

Your child is given homework on Monday. It is to be returned in the homework folder on Friday. I also expect your child to read each and every day. It would be great if you could make sure your child has many books available to read at home.House

Please make sure your child has pencils, crayons, paper, and a variety of learning tools at home.  Working together we can create an excellent learning environment for your child.  Students should carry a backpack to and from school each day.

Classroom Rules Our Five “Bees” Promise
Listen and follow directions. “Bee”lieve in yourself!
Raise your hand before speaking or leaving your seat. “Bee” a good listener.
Keep your hands and your feet to yourself. “Bee” responsible!
Respect your classmates and your teacher. “Bee” a hard worker.
  “Bee” kind!

Students will learn the six traits of good character, which include respect, trustworthiness, honesty, responsibility, fairness, and caring.

We will learn many new things in first grade. Here are some of the common core standards we are working on...

First Grade:
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.
Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

Just let me know if you’d like a complete list of Common Core State Standards and I’ll make a copy for you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me and I’ll be glad to help you any way I can.  Thank you!
